Head Special Olympic Coach:
Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year round training and competitions to more than 5.3 million athletes and Unified Sports partners in nearly 170 countries.
Special Olympics competitions are open to athletes ages 8 and up. Students engage in games and activities that develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Here at Calallen ISD, students participate in Bowling in the Fall semester and Track and Field in the Spring semester.
Unified Champion Schools (Meet in the Middle) Advisor:
Unified Champion Schools or Meet in the Middle is a unique Special Olympics program that is changing the lives of students throughout the United States. Members engage in advocacy, friendship, fitness, and sports opportunities...together with our students who have an intellectual disability. Meet in the Middle emphasizes three core components: Inclusive Youth Leadership and Activation, Unified Sports, and Whole School Involvement. Students participate in a wide variety of activities, from conducting "Spread the Word" to "End the Word" awareness campaigns to hosting Unified competitions in a variety of sports. Authentic social inclusion is always the goal, so students of varying abilities participate in every opportunity as peers and equals, forming true friendships and utilizing the unique talents and abilities of each person.
